LOCKED IN: Maroons extend Billy Slater as Queensland chases Origin series hat-trick

The Maroons have locked in Billy Slater for 2024 after the superstar coach reportedly agreeing to a one-year extension.

Slater has won his first two State of Origin series in charge of Queensland and will now try for a hat-trick next year.

The Maroons haven’t won three series in a row since 2017 and there were fears Slater would walk away after he missed out on a rare clean sweep last month.

But the Queensland great, who played in their unprecedented run of eight straight series wins between 2006 and 2013, has decided go again and could sign a contract that includes 2025.

“We’ve established that Billy wants to keep coaching the Maroons,” QRL boss Ben Ikin told The Courier Mail.

“Now we’ll work through the specifics of how that looks, both for Billy and the QRL.”

Maroons great Corey Parker said it was a “great acquisition” from the QRL.

The Fox League panel discussed the news on Friday night.

“Great news for Billy Slater and the QRL,” Parker said on Fox League.

“Billy’s shown over the last two seasons just what it is to play for that jersey, who they play for, their identity, what they are as a football side more importantly and not to mention the two series wins as well.

“Great acquisition for Queensland, if he’s able to do a multi-year deal, even better.

“He’s got a wonderful support crew around him. He’s always said openly that as long as the role is vacant and he’s the right man for it that he’ll continue to do it so great news for Queenslanders.”
