Last year it was Gold Trip, ridden by jockey Mark Zahra, that went on to win the Melbourne Cup from barrier 14 — becoming the seventh horse in history to do so from that position.
Now attention turns back once more to the barrier draw ahead of the latest running of the great race, with the event taking place at the end of the Derby Day card.
The all-important draw is expected at approximately 5.30pm (AEDT) on Saturday afternoon and will take place at Flemington Racecourse.

Now, realistically it is possible to win the race from any barrier although the odds are very much against the horse who jumps from gate 18.
That barrier is yet to produce a winner in the entire 161 years of running the race. In contrast, barrier five has yielded the most success with eight wins.
