LIVE AFL: Saints stun rusty Blues early as emerging contender eyes shock top-five spot

St Kilda and Carlton will face off in a crucial Round 21 AFL clash at Marvel Stadium on Sunday afternoon as the finals race heats up.

The Saints (11-8, 106.5%), looking for a third consecutive victory, have been bolstered by the return of Max King and Bradley Hill.

Meanwhile, the Blues (10-8-1, 116.5%), who haven’t tasted defeat since June, could slide into fifth on the AFL ladder if they emerged victorious this weekend.

QUARTER-BY-QUARTER MATCH REPORT

There were no late changes for either side, with Liam Stocker (St Kilda) and Ed Curnow (Carlton) named the starting subs.

After an eight-minute arm-wrestle, the Saints struck first, with ruck Rowan Marshall pushinng forward to take a mark and convert a set-shot goal, before Dan Butler added another after a quick centre bounce clearance.

But the Blues started to find theuir groove midway through the first quarter, getting on top around the coalface as skipper Patrick Cripps led from the front.

Jack Martin was awarded a goal by the ARC — after the soft call from his set-shot attempt was a behind — before Blake Acres added another to give Carlton a two-point lead.
