Key Melbourne Demons defender Jake Lever signs four-year contract extension

Star Melbourne defender Jake Lever has tied his long-term future to the club in a key signing on the eve of the Demons’ finals campaign.

A premiership player in 2021, Lever was already locked in until the end of next season and has put pen to paper on a further four years that will likely make the 27-year-old a Demon for life.

“To have Jake commit for a further four seasons is a great outcome for the club,” Melbourne list manager Tim Lamb said.

Lever has played 102 games for Melbourne since crossing from Adelaide at the end of the 2017 season and formed a near-impenetrable defensive partnership with Steven May.

“He is an outstanding player and a crucial cog in our defence as well as an influential leader and mentor to our young players,” Lamb said.

“Jake’s passion and commitment to our club is second to none. He works tirelessly on his game, is always striving to improve and is driven to helping us achieve our goals.

“We look forward to the role he can play for us this AFL finals series and in the years to come.”

The Demons have locked away key planks of their senior team on long-term deals, including midfield guns Clayton Oliver and Christian Petracca.

Melbourne will play Collingwood at the MCG on Thursday night for a place in the preliminary final.
