KEY DRAFT CHANGE LOOMS
Top draftees are reportedly set to be signed to three-year contracts rather than the current two-year deals under the new collective bargaining agreement.
AFL Media’s Callum Twomey reports the league proposed the three-year deals for the top 20 picks in a bid to help clubs retain their top talent rather than sign them to early contract extensions.
The report adds it’s unclear if players who star in their opening seasons will be able to renegotiate their third year.
Players were this week asked to vote on a proposal from the AFL Players’ Association on the CBA, which covers both the AFL and AFLW.
Northern clubs have been strong in their desire for longer maiden contracts, with the report suggesting the three-year deals could come into effect as soon as this year’s draft.
DOGS UTILITY WEIGHING UP FUTURE
Western Bulldogs utility Buku Khamis is reportedly weighing up options for a move as he struggles to break into the senior side.
Khamis, 23, has played 10 games at senior level, but only one this season as the Dogs look to find the right mix of their suite of key position players.
AFL Media’s Josh Gabelich said Khamis had interest from Collingwood among other potential suitors.
“He‘s got an offer to remain at the Whitten Oval,” he said on SEN’s Sportsday.
“The Western Bulldogs are waiting to see (if he takes that), but he‘s weighing up some options.
“I‘m told that Collingwood has shown a little bit of interest, which if you think back to last year what they did with even a Billy Frampton … they’ve been really good at identifying roles.
“I think North Melbourne have shown some interest as well. He‘s got a decision to make across the coming weeks.”
Khamis booted 41 goals from 18 games at VFL level this season.
Another tall is set to be on his way out of the Dogs, with ruckman Jordan Sweet requesting a trade to Port Adelaide.
