Super durable Crisp looks for new deal

Jon Pierik

Collingwood star Jack Crisp expects to open contract renegotiations early in the new year, with free agency an option should a suitable deal not be brokered.

Crisp is in the prime of his career, and the back-to-back Copeland Trophy winner will be one of the most sought after free agents should he wish to explore that avenue.

However, Crisp is keen to remain a Magpie, and will seek a multi-year deal, coming as his five-year contract extension expires.

Crisp’s manager, Anthony McConville of Mac’s Sports Promotions, said discussions had yet to open, with both parties having focused recently on the national draft, beginning on Monday.

“We expect conversations will be had in the early part of next year. Ideally, we can get to some common ground and arrangement,” McConville said.

“I think he has a good three, four, five years left at the top end.”

Magpies’ chief executive Graham Wright did not wish to comment.

Crisp does not turn 30 until the end of next season, with industry sources suggesting the two parties could land on a three-year deal.

Having made his name as a rebounding half-back, Crisp spent considerable time in the midfield this year, his run and carry instrumental in the Magpies’ premiership push under new coach Craig McRae.

He has played 188 consecutive games, the longest streak by an active player, and averaged 23.8 disposals and 9.6 contested possessions per game this year.

He had a strong September, finishing runner-up in the Gary Ayres award for the best finals player. He had 23 disposals and a goal in the qualifying final against Geelong, 24 disposals and two goals in the winning semi-final against Fremantle, and 29 touches and a goal in the losing preliminary final against Sydney.

Crisp had 11 Brownlow Medal votes, a club high he shared with Nick Daicos.

Other potential 2023 free agents include Eric Hipwood (Brisbane), Jeremy Howe (Collingwood), Jack Silvagni (Carlton), Tom Doedee (Adelaide), Mark Blicavs (Geelong), Ben McKay (North Melbourne), Darcy Parish and Mason Redman (Essendon) and Jade Gresham (St Kilda).
