‘Is that allowed’? Former Test star stunned by bizarre double-hit drama

There were confusing scenes in the Sheffield Shield on Tuesday when former Test quick Jackson Bird was left bemused by conceding a single in bizarre circumstances.

Tasmania seamer Bird was bowling to South Australia’s Jake Weatherald when the batter blocked the ball straight back to his opponent.

Bird collected the ball with one hand and swiftly pinged it back towards the stumps behind Weatherald, who had snuck out of his crease while playing the front foot defence.

But the throw was wayward and went straight at the midsection of Weatherald, who instinctively defended himself with his bat.

The result was the ball being deflected down to fine leg — and the batter made the most of the opportunity, deciding to scurry through for a single.

“Is that allowed? I don’t think so,” the commentator said.

“Jackson Bird immediately says sorry, and then, ‘what’s going on?’”

According to the scorecard, the run didn’t count and Weatherald returned to strike.

South Australia was 6-89 in its second innings at the time, but it later fought back to reach 8-228 — a lead of 210.
