IF THE SOCCEROOS BEAT DENMARK
Then they’re into the round of 16, and will equal the golden generation’s achievement in 2006 by finishing second in Group D — unless Tunisia can pull off a miracle result against France and beat the defending champions by several goals, in which case the Socceroos could finish first. Unlikely, but mathematically possible.
IF THEY DRAW
A single point will still be enough for Australia to reach the next round and clinch second spot in Group D, so long as France also beats Tunisia in the other match that will be played at the same time.
IF THEY LOSE
Then it’s all over. Denmark goes through, and the Socceroos miss out on the chance to advance to the next stage.
WHO ARE THE POSSIBLE OPPONENTS IN THE ROUND OF 16?
The second-placed team from Group D will face the winner of Group C. Poland (4 points) currently sit in first spot there, with Argentina (3 points) second and Saudi Arabia (3 points) third.
But on the same night the Socceroos face Denmark, Poland will take on Argentina, and Saudi Arabia meet Mexico (1 point), so a lot can change. Those matches will be played at 6am
If Australia can get it done, the Saudis are probably the most beatable of those three teams, followed by Poland, and then Argentina. But let’s get it done first.
