The Roosters have emerged as a potential suitor for Ben Hunt in a move that could potentially thwart a Brisbane homecoming.
Hunt was keen to put contract negotiations on hold while on Kangaroos duty during the Pacific Championships, but the race for his signature is now expected to heat up. The Bulldogs, Broncos and Dolphins have been linked to the former St George Illawarra captain, who has been released from the final year of his Red V contract by mutual agreement.
However, the Roosters are expected to enter the race and could soon have salary cap space to make a serious bid after informing Terrell May he is free to explore his options, despite being contracted for two seasons.
The Roosters will start the season without Sam Walker and Brandon Smith, who are recovering from ACL injuries. Hunt’s ability to cover both positions makes him an attractive option.
“There’s a couple of players that we’re looking at because of the injuries,” said Roosters coach Trent Robinson at the announcement of a five-year major sponsorship agreement with BYD.
“Obviously with a nine and seven, it didn’t only affect the back end of this year, it affects next year as well. We’re really comfortable with some of the young players that we’ve got coming through, but we are also looking at covering those positions if it’s right. We don’t feel like we’re in a rush, but if it’s right then we’ll look at options.”

Pressed on the possibility of pursuing Hunt, Robinson said: “He’s an exceptional player. He’s done that for a long period of time.
“As I said, people want a direct answer. The thing is we’ve been quite clear about our squad for a while now.
“Ever since Luke [Keary] made his decision [to leave], we’re really clear with where we were heading into over the next couple of years and we’re happy with that. But if the opportunity arises to accommodate that seven and nine position in different ways, then we will. But it has to be right for the next couple of years as well.”
Hunt has expressed an interest in returning to the Broncos, a sentiment that was welcomed by new coach Michael Maguire. The Dolphins are another option if the veteran halfback wants to return to Queensland, while the Bulldogs are considering their position. Incumbent Canterbury No.7 Toby Sexton is off contract at the end of 2025.
However, the Roosters have a long history of making big recruitment plays and could become a serious contender for his services.
Roosters skipper James Tedesco was diplomatic when asked about the prospect of signing Hunt.
“I know our squad for next year, I know what the team looks like,” Tedesco said. “If we do add someone of value, then that’s a bonus. I don’t know what that looks like or where it’s going [to land].”
