‘He’s a ten-year player’: Roosters’ huge boost as halfback prodigy re-signs — Transfer Whispers

Roosters young gun Sam Walker has reportedly signed a two-year contract extension that will see him remain in Bondi until the end of 2025.

Walker’s halves partner Luke Keary’s contract expires at the end of the 2024 season, meaning the pair will have at least two more years together.

Roosters powerbrokers have now blocked a return to Queensland for their 20-year-old halfback who could be a “ten-year player” according to The Daily Telegraph’s Michael Carayannis.

“Reports in the paper today that Sam Walker is close to inking a two-year extension, that’ll take him to the end of 2025, that’s a big signing for the Roosters,” Carayannis said on SEN.

“He looks like a ten-year player; he didn’t produce the consistency this year that we thought he may be able to do but looked much more comfortable.”

Meanwhile, the future of Keary remains uncertain despite the blistering finish the 30-year-old produced at the end of the 2023 season.

The veteran five-eighth rediscovered some of his best form, but superstar Joey Manus is desperate to get his hands on the ball and could be the man to take the No.6 jersey in the future.

Keary has ongoing health concerns after a number of ugly head knocks left him sidelined for extended periods — and the gun playmaker will be hoping to avoid further concussions.

“There’s an interesting discussion point at the Roosters, what do they do for their long-term halves partner, Luke Keary obviously has until 2024,” Carayannis said.

“Joey Manu wants to get closer to the footy, (Joseph) Sua’ali’i who wants to get more involved, and they still have James Tedesco.

“I thought when they were at their best it was when Luke Keary performed really strongly at the back-end of the year and he freed up Joey Manu to have that roaming role.”
