Hawks’ top pick missing as Dons, Cats and Suns unveil recruits: AFL Pre-Season Teams

The first AFL squads of 2023 have been revealed with Geelong, Essendon and Gold Coast revealing team lists for their match simulations on Thursday evening.

With the hit-outs to be played with varying lengths, and with some non-AFL listed players expected to feature across this week’s games, there are no specific 23-man team sheets.

But it’ll provide a first glance at many fresh faces and trade recruits.

Round 1

Essendon named a 34-man squad which includes the returning Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti, best-23 bolter Jye Menzie and new captain Zach Merrett.

Gold Coast will unveil recruits Ben Long and Tom Berry, plus No.6 pick Bailey Humphrey who has had an impressive first pre-season, while Ben King, Touk Miller and Brandon Ellis are among those unavailable.

Geelong named a 53-man squad including 19 VFL players with Jack Bowes, Ollie Henry and Tanner Bruhn to be sighted in their new colours for the first time.

Opponents Hawthorn will be without ex-Cat Cooper Stephens (concussion) and top draft pick Cam McKenzie.

The lists for Friday’s games are expected to be revealed on Thursday.

All match simulations and practice matches will be broadcast exclusively on both Kayo and Foxtel.

Eight match simulations will be played across February 23 and 24, while nine official practice matches across March 2 to 4 will include expert Fox Footy commentary teams, and several of the matches will be shown in Ultra HD.

In addition, fans will enjoy free entry to all practice matches.
