AFL Commission chair Richard Goyder at the AFL’s season launch in March confirmed sports commentary legend Bruce McAvaney would be one of the Hall of Fame inductees. He will become the 11th member of the Australian Football Hall of Fame’s media category.
McAvaney, a life member of the AFL, was inducted into the Logies Hall of Fame last year for his work across multiple sports and the Olympics over 40-plus years.
But it’s his calling of AFL matches for Channel 7, as well as hosting of major events like the Brownlow Medal, that made him the voice of the sport for a generation.
The Australian Football Hall of Fame seeks to recognise and enshrine players, coaches, umpires, administrators and media representatives who have made significant contributions to Australian Football – at any level – since the game‘s inception in 1858.
Players are eligible to be inducted only after they’ve been retired for at least five years. Some of the players who retired at the end of 2017 that could come into consideration for induction include Nick Riewoldt, Sam Mitchell, Steve Johnson, Matthew Boyd and James Kelly.
The event, though, will be somewhat marred after the AFL Commission on Tuesday removed legend Barry Cable from the Hall of Fame after being found guilty of sexually abusing a girl at the height of his playing career.
The 2023 Australian Football Hall of Fame committee is Richard Goyder (Chair), Graham Cornes, Ross Glendinning, Debbie Lee, Karen Lyon, Paul Marsh, Alister Nicholson, Michael O’Loughlin, David Parkin and Patrick Keane (Secretary).
