GRAPHIC: Kyrgios’ ‘gruesome’ reveal proves why he had to quit Australian Open

Nick Kyrgios has shared a “pretty gruesome” photo of the injuries that cost him a chance at his home grand slam, after withdrawing one day before his opening singles match at Melbourne Park.

Kyrgios made the shock announcement on Monday afternoon that he had suffered a parameniscal cyst on his left knee after a minor tear of the lateral meniscus.

He will now undergo surgery to repair the injury – but his long-term physio revealed the lengths the top-ranked Aussie had gone to in an attempt to compete at the season-opening grand slam.

Will Maher told reporters: “To Nick’s credit, he did try everything, to the point even last week he was having a procedure called a fenestration and drainage where they use a syringe to try and drain the cyst, which Nick has some pretty gruesome photos of. I’m sure he’ll probably share them later.

“Any amount of injections that he could try to get into his knee without causing long-term damage. We came to Melbourne with the hope there might be some pressure relieved from that procedure and he’d have some relief and be able to get up to a level he was comfortable to compete.”

As Maher predicted, Kyrgios took to social media to share what had he had undergone in an attempt to play.

Kyrgios captioned a – rather sickening – Instagram Story, writing: “A little insight into what was in my knee 4 days prior. Drainage procedure,” with a frowning emoji.
