COWBOYS HUGE COUP

The Cowboys have poached the son of a former representative star from the Broncos in a hammer blow to the club’s Queensland rivals.

Kaiden Lahrs, the son of Tom Learoyd-Lahrs, has reportedly quit the Brisbane club to sign a three-year deal with North Queensland according to The Courier Mail.

Tom Learoyd-Lahrs played 120 NRL games for the Broncos and Raiders, as well as four State of Origin games for NSW and four Tests for Australia.

His 16-year-old son is following in his footsteps, and the lock forward reportedly has the potential to be an NRL star after winning a prestigious award.

Kaiden won the Sam Thaiday Medal, awarded to the best league player at the famous Kirwan State High School, while still in Year 11.

Lahrs is reportedly contracted with the Broncos until the end of 2023 and will join up with the Cowboys from 2024 onwards.

The young gun is set to be added to the Cowboys’ development list once he finishes his schooling in 2024 — joining North Queensland’s talent pool of young forwards.

Reuben Cotter, Griffin Neame, Jeremiah Nanai and Heilum Luki are all under the age of 24 and Payten’s influence on the group was reportedly a big drawcard for Lahrs.

While Lahrs’ father’s achievements were impressive, Tom believes his son’s work ethic is consideribly better than his was at his young age.

“He loves being busy, he’s one of those footballers who goes out and competes,” Learoyd-Lahrs said.

“He’s just a bit of a sponge, he’s just got a real thirst for knowledge and learning. I know they (the Broncos) will be happy with the way he applies himself while he’s down there.”

KELLY’S RUGBY LEAGUE LIFELINE

Former Broncos playmaker Albert Kelly has reportedly signed with the Redcliffe Dolphins Queensland Cup side for 2023.

According to Code Sports, the 31-year-old year old will have a chance to impress Wayne Bennett in the off-season.

Kelly wasn’t offered a contract extension with Brisbane for the 2023 season, playing 12 games across two season at the Red Hill club.

Kelly made his NRL debut for the Sharks in 2010, before making the move to the Titans and eventually heading overseas to ply his trade for Hull Kingston Rovers and Hull FC before returning to Australia.

The one-time Indigenous All Star will now be coached by former Bronco Ben Teo’o, who leads the Dolphins feeder team.
