Football Australia issues EIGHT more bans as fallout from A-League protest widens

Football Australia has issued a further eight bans to spectators as the fallout from the mass pitch invasion during an A-League game continues, with the tally of bans issued now standing at ten.

The incident, which took place at AAMI Park last Saturday night during a match between Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City, saw more than 150 spectators storm onto the field during the first half, with a goalkeeper hospitalised as a result.

Football Australia’s latest round of bans range from five to 20 years, with the sanctions effective immediately and precluding them from “all related football activity”.

The eight individuals were hit with an assortment of charges, with two men banned for 20 years charged with violent disorder, criminal damage, unlawful assault, entry to competition space, discripting a match, public nuisance and riotous behaviour.

One of the two individuals, a 21-year-old Northcote man, was deemed to have discharged a flare in addition to those charges.

Earlier this week, two men were issued life bans by Football Australia, with one of the individuals alleged to have struck goalkeeper Tom Glover with a metal bucket full of sand and charged by Victoria Police.

The 23-year-old was also been charged with violent disorder, discharge missile, intent to cause injury, recklessly cause injury, unlawful assault, entry to sporting competition space, disrupting a match, public nuisance and riotous behaviour.

The other, a 19-year-old, was charged with a separate alleged assault on Mr Glover, as well as an alleged assault on a security guard.

He will face charges of violent disorder, discharge missile, three counts of unlawful assault, entry to competition space, disrupting a match, public nuisance, riotous behaviour, discharge and possess flare.

Both handed themselves into police on Monday.
