Finch lasts just two balls as horror batting streak continues

Australia’s limited-overs captain Aaron Finch’s horror run has continued, holing out for a duck in the second over of the second one-day match against New Zealand in Cairns.

After David Warner played out a maiden to Trent Boult, Finch defended his first delivery from Matt Henry off the back foot then aimed a desperate drive at a fuller delivery, completely mistiming the shot.

It presented a simple catch to New Zealand captain Kane Williamson at mid-off and left Australia 1-0.

The Australian opener has six single-figure scores in his past seven innings and just one half-century from 13 innings this year. In last week’s one-day series against Zimbabwe in Townsville, Finch scored 15, one and five, while in the opening match against New Zealand on Tuesday night he also scored five.

For the firth time during Australia’s North Queensland sojourn, against Zimbabwe in Townsville and now New Zealand in Cairns, the captain who won the toss — in this case Williamson — decided to bowl.

The early starts in Townsville meant the team batting first had to contend with damp wickets while day/night games in Cairns on a slowish pitch mean the ball tends to skid on with the dew at night, making stroke play easier.
