Recently, the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) welcomed a familiar face back to the pitch. After an eight-year absence, former USWNT defender Kate Farrelly has signed with Gotham FC. Farrelly is a veteran of the NWSL, having played for the Boston Breakers from 2009-2010 and the Washington Spirit from 2013-2014.
Farrelly is a native of New Jersey and played college soccer at Rutgers University. She was drafted by the Boston Breakers in the 2009 WPS Draft and made her professional debut in April of that year. During her two seasons with the Breakers, Farrelly appeared in 34 matches and scored one goal.
In 2013, Farrelly signed with the Washington Spirit and played for the club until 2014. During her time with the Spirit, she appeared in 40 matches and scored three goals. She was also part of the USWNT squad that won gold at the 2012 London Olympics.
After leaving the NWSL in 2014, Farrelly continued to play professionally in Europe. She played for clubs in Germany, Sweden, and England before returning to the US in 2019.
Now, Farrelly is back in the NWSL and ready to make an impact with Gotham FC. She brings a wealth of experience to the team and is expected to be a key contributor this season. With her leadership and skill, Farrelly will be a valuable asset to Gotham FC as they look to make a run at the NWSL championship this year.
It’s great to see Farrelly back in the NWSL after an eight-year absence. Her experience and leadership will be a huge boost for Gotham FC and it will be exciting to see what she can do on the pitch this season. Welcome back, Kate!
