F1 LIVE: ‘No way’ Ricciardo could match rivals in tough quali as sprint race looms

LIVE: After a dismal qualifying, Daniel Ricciardo holds out little hope that he can discover some extra pace in his McLaren and challenge at he Brazilian Grand Prix.

A wild qualifying session threw up a series of stunning results after wet weather struck in Q3, leading to Kevin Magnussen winning a shock first-ever pole in his Haas – also a first for the team in their seven seasons.

But Ricciardo made an error on his final flying lap in Q2, leaving him down in 14th for Sunday morning’s one-hour sprint race (6.30am AEDT) – which will decide the subsequent grid for Monday’s full-length race (5am AEDT).

Ricciardo was a full ten places behind teammate Lando Norris, but was at a loss to explain his lack of pace.

“We aborted the last lap, it started getting a bit more slippery at turn one,” he said after Q2. “I locked up, I went wide, and we didn’t have time to do another lap.

“To be honest, it didn’t feel that bad. There was just no way I could do those lap times. Just didn’t have it. Not really sure why, yet, because nothing felt off, just didn’t feel like we had as much as the rivals in most cases.”

Friday’s earlier practice session had been completed in the dry, conditions that are more likely to be repeated for the sprint race. But Ricciardo says there’s no indications those conditions will benefit his McLaren.

“I wouldn’t say we were competitive this morning, we struggled a little bit. Then we made some changes, but obviously quite different conditions.

“It’s hard to really know yet. As I said, nothing points to us having awesome pace tomorrow. But we’ve got FP2 to get stuck in a little more and see what we can do.”

Free Practice 2 takes place at 2.30am AEDT Sunday, ahead of the Sprint race at 6.30am. Follow the action in our live blog below!
