She’s Extreme is expected to start favourite in the Spring Champion Stakes as punters continued to back the filly on Friday.
While another filly in the classic, Renaissance Woman, was crunched from $21 into $7 at the start of the week, She’s Extreme firmed from $6 into $4.80 and is expected to leapfrog Melbourne visitor Elliptical ($4.20) by start time.
Bookies were convinced punters were happy to be parochial with concerns about backing an interstate horse having his first official start the Sydney way of going.
The TAB’s Glenn Munsie said of the Anthony Cummings-trained filly: “She opened $6 on Wednesday, she was still $6 early Friday, but she’s been a good mover today and is now easily the most popular runner in the race.
“There’s still solid money for Elliptical, who firmed on Wednesday, but is now back out to $4.20.
“There’s been money for all the horses in single figures, as well as a bit of money for Matcha Latte ($13) and Manzoice ($34).
“But I wouldn’t be surprised if She’s Extreme starts favourite due to the fact our customers are never really keen to spear into an interstate horse that is favourite in a race in Sydney.”
Munsie confirmed there had been several handy bets, including $930 at $6, $1000 at $5, $1250 at $4.80 and two bets of $6000 at $4.80.
Renaissance Woman drifted to $13 with Munsie suggesting punters may be convinced the horse is only using the race to keep ticking over ahead of the VRC Oaks in ten days time.
BlueBet’s chief Michael Sullivan was another convinced She’s Extreme would be elevated to the top line of betting and said: “Her three runs have been good, we bet $6.50 and she’s into $4.60 now.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if she does start favourite. It’s all been one way with the filly. Even when I looked this morning, she was still $5.50, but there’s been a good flow of money for her.
“Elliptical ran second in the Caulfield Guineas, it was a pretty good Guineas this year, so that’s a decent entrée into a race like this. If he handles the track and way of going he will race well.”
Fillies traditionally struggled against the ‘boys’ in this three-year-old classic, but Yankee Rose (2016), Maid Of Heaven (2018) and Montefilia (2020) all landed the cash.
Cummings won the Spring Champion Stakes with Hotel Grand in 2005, which was freshened and backed up in the Cox Plate, only to finish last. He returned in the autumn to win the Randwick Guineas.
Cummings struck again the following year in the Spring Champion Stakes with Teranaba.
Prominent breeder Rob Crabtree, who bought She’s Extreme for $275,000 at the Easter Yearling Sale, told the Herald this week: “I would love to see her on top of the ground because I’m sure that’s where her best performances will be. In the meantime, she can cope with the heavy and a number of them can’t.”
