Australian James Duckworth staged a third-set fightback on Friday morning (AEST) but was unable to stave off defeat as he crashed out of the US Open in for sets to British No. 2 Daniel Evans.
Evans, seeded 20, took the first two sets comfortably before Duckworth fought back to claim the third. But the comeback was short-lived, Evans going on to close the match out 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Elsewhere, rising Danish star and 28th seed Holger Rune progressed thanks to a walkover from big-serving American John Isner, while 15th seed Marin Cilic, of Croatia, beat Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas in three.
In the women’s draw, top seed Iga Swiatek, of Poland, cruised through 6-3, 6-2 against American stalwart Sloane Stephens and eighth-seeded American Jessica Pegula beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich, of Belarus, in two.
Other seeds, Czech Petra Kvitova, Swiss Belinda Bencic (13) and Belarusian Victoria Azarenka (26), all progressed to the third round.
