Ivan Toney scored twice, the latter from the spot, as Brentford’s captain led the promoted Premier League team to a 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion.
Toney’s brace on his 100th appearance for the club, one strike in each half, took his tally to eight for the season already and 55 in total.
Brighton had more shots (21 to 7), possession (72%), and corners (11 to 2), but Brentford keeper David Raya pulled off seven saves – and a clinical Brentford made their rivals pay.
Toney ghosted to the front post in the 27th minute to deliver a delightful backheel flick into the back post after some great work from Bryan Mbeumo and Frank Onyeka to set up the chance. He won the penalty in the 64th minute when brought down by Joel Veltman before burying the resulting 12-yard attempt.

Brentford move to eighth on the ladder, one point behind Brighton. The Seagulls have now claimed just one point from their first three matches under manager Roberto De Zerbi, having failed to score despite taking 35 shots in their last two games.
With another clinical finish from the penalty spot (his third this season) Toney took his tally to 20 penalties for Brentford – from 20 attempts.
The Englishman has added two assists alongside his eight goals this season, with his 10 goal involvements in as many games the most of any English player as calls grow for the 26-year-old to play a key role for the Three Lions in next month’s World Cup in Qatar.
