England’s stunning 94-point thrashing as cult hero scores four tries: World Cup Wrap

Newcastle Knights winger Dom Young scored four first-half tries as England thrashed Greece 94-4 on Saturday to set up a likely Rugby League World Cup quarter-final against Papua New Guinea.

The winning margin was England’s largest at a World Cup, surpassing their 76-4 victory over Russia in 2000.

The win meant the English advance as Group A winners, with their last-eight knockout match against the runners-up of Group D scheduled for November 5 in Wigan.

Young’s tries were just four of 17 scored at Sheffield’s Bramall Lane where debutants Greece offered up some early resistance and trailed 10-4 after Siteni Taukamo crossed the whitewash.

But after that there was only one side in it as Matty Lees, Ryan Hall, Tom Burgess and George Williams all crossed to help the tournament hosts to a 44-4 halftime lead.

The Greeks fared no better in the second period as Tommy Makinson and Marc Sneyd both notched up tries, along with another each for both Burgess and Hall.

Andy Ackers (2), Joe Batchelor and Kai Pearce-Paul also got their names on the scoresheet, Sneyd slotting over 13 conversions.

Group B will be decided later Saturday as, first, Fiji take on Scotland and then reigning champions Australia play Italy.

Friday’s action saw Jahrome Hughes star as New Zealand brushed Ireland aside 48-10 to qualify for the quarters as Group C winners.

The Kiwis had already notched up pool victories over Lebanon (34-12) and Jamaica (68-6) and will now play the runners-up of Group B, Fiji, in the last eight in Hull on November 5.

Fiji scraped a victory against Scotland on Sunday morning, winning 30-14 to book a quarterfinal against the world’s No.1 ranked team.

The Bati struggled to capitalise on their 60 per cent possession and made 16 errors across the 80-minute contest compared to Scotland’s 10.

Gun backrower Viliame Kikau was also sent to the sin bin in the 65th minute while Scotland had a pair of players given their marching orders early in the second half.

Lebanon play Jamaica in the final game of Group C on Sunday and the Michael Cheika-coached Cedars will qualify as runners-up if they avoid defeat.
