The French had the best of the early chances when a cross came in from the right that found Olivier Giroud’s head, but the AC Milan striker could only direct his effort straight at Jordan Pickford.

However, it wasn’t long before France opened the scoring as a counter attack led by Kylian Mbappe eventually found the feet of Tchouameni, who unleashed a long-range piledriver that a diving Pickford couldn’t keep out.

England boss Gareth Southgate has named an unchanged line-up from the Three Lions’ victory over Senegal, as have France.

Southgate resisted the temptation to switch to a back three to counter the constant threat of Kylian Mbappe on the left wing, as English right back Kyle Walker has been entrusted with the job of keeping the Frenchman quiet.

Raheem Sterling, who briefly the England camp after his home was broken into before returning in recent days, is among the substitutes and could have a major part to play.

For Les Bleus, skipper Hugo Lloris makes his 143rd cap for the national side which makes him France’s all-time appearance maker as the Tottenham Hotspur gloveman overtook Lilian Thuram.

The winner of the salivating quarter final clash will face Morocco in the semi-finals after the Atlas Lions beat Portugal to become the first African nation to reach the final four at the World Cup.
