Eels build for NRLW future by luring NSW Origin halfback from Dragons

Parramatta have pulled off a signing coup as they look to build a foundation for long-term NRLW success, luring NSW halfback Rachael Pearson from the Dragons on a three-year deal.

The 29-year-old joins Australian representative forward Kennedy Cherrington in committing to the blue and golds for the next three years, with the key signings coming after an agreement between the NRL and Rugby League Players Association allowing NRLW players to ink multi-year deals for the first time.

“Opportunities with rugby league came later [in life] for me, so it means a lot to have that security for the next three years,” Pearson said.

“I think it obviously shows they [the Eels] value their players, and do have that long-term commitment into the future…it’s something that’s new to the women’s game, and there’s going to be a lot more of it.”

The signing of Pearson, who is in the fourth year of an apprenticeship as an underground coalmine fitter and turner, highlights the Eels’ desire to recruit experienced players to mentor what is expected to be a mainly young squad.

“I did debut last year, so I am still new to NRLW, but I have played sport for a while, and would like to mentor the young girls coming through and play alongside them, train with them, and strengthen the club,” Pearson said.

Pearson had a number of clubs vying for her signature.

“I had interest from a few clubs which is a really nice feeling,” she said. “It makes the decision difficult, but I am really happy with where I have chosen. The Parramatta Eels had a great season in the women’s last year.”

With five years’ coaching experience at her hometown club, the Hay Magpies, Pearson will be a huge asset for the Eels, and said she was looking forward to learning from coach Dean Widders.

“Coaching is extremely hard, but it has its rewards – you see when people learn a new skill or finally a play comes together, so you do have a greater respect for coaches when you’ve been one,” Pearson said.

Parramatta are one of 10 teams in the expanded NRLW competition this season. Clubs are slowly starting to get their rosters together for the start of pre-season training in late May.

Newcomers the Tigers took advantage of the newly-won ability to offer multi-year deals, signing inaugural captain Botille Vette-Welsh on a two-year contract alongside Jillaroo and NSW representative Kezie Apps and former Roosters prop Sarah Togatuki, who are both locked in for three years.

Canberra have also secured experienced players for their NRLW campaign, with Simaima Taufa and Ashleigh Quinlan joining the club from the Eels along with former Rooster Zahara Temara.

The draw for the 2023 women’s premiership is expected to be released this week.
