The Dragons have officially rejected boom fullback Tyrell Sloan’s request to be released from the remainder of his contract, telling the young star he won’t be allowed to join Wayne Bennett’s Dolphins.
The 20-year-old formalised his intention to leave the club but a meeting of the St George Illawarra board on Tuesday dismissed the request.
The Indigenous All-Star was limited to just eight NRL appearances this year and lost his first-choice fullback status to Cody Ramsey, but the Dragons want Sloan to fight for a regular position in 2023.
He still has two years left on his deal with St George Illawarra.
Bennett has been circling a No.1 for the Dolphins’ foundation side, and had hoped to lure Sloan to Brisbane as one of his main recruitment targets as they continue to pursue Cameron Munster for 2024.
But the Dragons have told the young gun he is expected at pre-season training in November and still remains a big part of their future as they try to lock down captain and Dally M contender Ben Hunt on a two-year extension until the end of 2025.
