Dragons call urgent meeting for players and staff amid uncertain Hunt future

The St George Illawarra Dragons have reportedly called a meeting for all players and staff amid rampant rumours Ben Hunt could be immediately released from his contract.

Hunt has made no secret of his desire to leave the club, citing his wish to return to Queensland as the primary factor driving his exit.

However, the star halfback has a contract with the Red V until the end of 2025.

Rumours have been rife that should Hunt be granted his wish for an immediate release, he could link up with the Brisbane Broncos for the remainder of the season before joining the Gold Coast Titans on a two-year deal.

With the Hunt saga the latest chapter in a tumultuous season for the Dragons, Wide World of Sportsreports the club has called a meeting for everyone involved.

Although there was no concrete indication of what the meeting was about, the controversy surrounding Hunt’s uncertain future presents a likely idea of the primary topic of discussion.

Speaking on Big Sports Breakfast earlier on Monday, Daily Telegraph journalist Phil Rothfield revealed the meeting was shrouded in secrecy.

“Just to background you on this meeting, they don’t want any media so as of last night Andrew Lancaster the chairman still hadn’t told those who would be there – Ryan Webb (CEO) will be at the meeting, Ben Hunt, his agent, and of course Shane Flanagan – and he said he won’t tell them until and hour or so before the actual venue of the meeting,” Rothfield said.

The Dragons’ off-field woes have been matched by their performance on it this season, with a 48-18 thrashing at the hands of the New Zealand Warriors condemning the side to its 11th loss of the season.

However, the club remains two spots off the foot of the ladder with only the Bulldogs and Wests Tigers possessing worse records.
