‘Didn’t want to be a coach again’: How Gus helped Seibold bounce back from horror Broncos stint

Anthony Seibold has opened up on how Phil Gould helped him move on from his failed stint at the Broncos and encouraged him to not give up on coaching.

Seibold, who is now head coach of Manly, joined the Broncos in 2019 with high expectations.

He was just named Dally M Coach of the Year after guiding the Rabbitohs to a preliminary final in his first season at the helm.

Round 1

Seibold took the Broncos to the finals in his first season but was knocked out in the first week after a 58-nil thumping from the Eels.

Things got even worse in 2020 as the Broncos suffered their biggest loss in history in Round 4 — a 59-nil loss to the Roosters.

Seibold copped most of the blame for Brisbane’s demise and he ended up parting ways with the club less than two full seasons into his five-year contract.

In an interview with 9 News on Tuesday, the 48-year-old revealed it was Gould who helped him cope with the fall out.

After a break from coaching, Seibold linked up with the then-coach of England’s rugby union team, Eddie Jones.

The Sea Eagles then came knocking after Des Hasler’s sacking in October.

Seibold’s Manly era was kicked off in the best possible fashion with the club bouncing back from a horror 2022 to win the pre-season challenge.
