Cummins spills on secret group chat with ScoMo … and why he had to ‘quickly delete’ a message

There could have been several moments during the infancy of Pat Cummins’ tenure as Australia’s new Test captain when it really started to sink in.

But perhaps it was the addition to a rather extraordinary WhatsApp group that really made Cummins learn of the importance and weight his new role would carry.

During the first episode of Amazon Prime’s documentary The Test, Cummins is seen in the back of a car with fellow bowler Mitchell Starc at the wheel.

The skipper has a notification pop up on his phone and it is one very few people might ever expect to receive.

“I just opened up my phone then and I’ve just been added to a WhatsApp group called ‘Legends’ with Scott Morrison and Justin Langer in it,” Cummins said.

As Starc cheekily laughed in the front seat, Cummins explained he also had another WhatsApp group of the same name, but it consisted of himself, Starc and Josh Hazlewood.

“Hope I don’t send anything to the wrong group,” Cummins said.

Thankfully for the rest of us, Cummins told The Agethat he is human after all having sent something to the presumably more professional ‘Legends’ chat.

“I think it was a stat or a photo or a meme or something that came up and I sent it to the wrong group and I quickly had to delete it,” Cummins said.

“Sorry PM.”

Former Test captain Tim Paine also shared a three-man ‘Legends’ chat with Morrison and Langer, but what was the general gist of the content being bandied about by the trio?

“It was busy as well, every day’s play there was a ‘good luck, go get ‘em today,” Cummins said.

The 29-year-old took over the captaincy role from Paine just before the Ashes series last summer after the wicketkeeper resigned in the wake of his sexting scandal.

Cummins has gone on to win eight from 12 Tests as skipper and will look to continue his incredible rate as Australia embarks on tours of India and England later this year.
