Swimming Australia has been contacted for comment.

According to Nine News, Fraser’s family confirmed the Olympic great suffered “critical injuries”, including four broken ribs and a broken hip.

Nine News reporter Josh Bavas said the family believed they could have lost the champion swimmer.

Fraser’s daughter, Dawn-Lorraine, said her mother’s condition was improving. “At this time she is out of intensive care and doing much better than she was,” she told News Corp. “She should hopefully be OK”.

Fraser is one of Australia’s greatest Olympians, best known for winning three consecutive women’s 100m freestyle gold medals at the 1956, 1960 and 1964 Olympics.

The 87-year-old has been heavily involved in swimming since and is regularly seen at national and international meetings involving the Australian team.

Fraser was the first female to be elevated to legend status in the Australian Sport Hall of Fame.
