Openers Nishan Madushka (205) and captain Dimuth Karunaratne (115) combined for a 228-run first-wicket stand, before Kusal Mendis (245) came to the crease and was part of a 268-run partnership with Madushka.

When he fell, Angelo Matthews (100 not out) followed up on their good work, and with Dinesh Chandimal retiring hurt the Sri Lankans decided to declare once Matthews reached triple figures.

Meanwhile it was also just the third time in Test history a side reached 700 with only three wickets down, following Sri Lanka in 2004 vs Zimbabwe, and the West Indies’ 790-3 vs Pakistan in 1948.

Sri Lanka won the opening Test of the series by an innings and 280 runs while Ireland will be hoping to bat out a draw through the remainder of day four and day five.
