Fox League’s Yvonne Sampson said: “Melbourne with a commanding 18-point win over Manly and hopefully earning themselves a brand new fan in Sir Bob Geldof, who added a little bit of star power at AAMI Park tonight.

“Is Craig Bellamy a fan of the Boomtown Rats?”

Cooper Cronk said: “Absolutely. He would be. Do you reckon any of the players would know who Sir Bob Geldof is?”

Geldof was seen post-game in Melbourne’s changeroom in deep conversation with Storm coach Craig Bellamy, who explained the Irish rocker couldn’t understand by NRL scrums aren’t contested.

“I wasn’t a big fan of the Boomtown Rats but I was always a big fan of Bob’s, especially with the Band Aid things,” Bellamy said.

“He was in there asking me a lot of questions about the scrums. Sounds like he’s a bit of a rugby union fan. He was basically asking me ‘Why aren’t scrums a contest in your game?’”

Bellamy said Geldof was genuinely interested in the game but sledged the 71-year-old for asking one too many questions.

“He was quite interested in the game,” Bellamy said.

“He asked me a heap of questions. I’d just about had enough actually.

“He’s a great fella. We all know what a great singer and performer and what he’s done for charity over a long period of time.

“He was very into the game tonight. He watched a fair bit of rugby union by the sounds of it. It was great to have him in there.”

Melbourne winger Xavier Coates scored two tries as the Storm claimed their third win in a row to move up to third on the ladder.
