‘Complete package’: Panthers unsung hero trumps Cleary to claim Clive Churchill Medal

Panthers fullback Dylan Edwards has won the Clive Churchill Medal after an impressive performance to seal back-to-back premierships.

Penrith came away with a 28-12 win over their bitter rivals the Eels, blowing Brad Arthur’s side off the park.

The Panthers gun recorded 228 running metres, four tackle breaks and two try assists in a performance worthy of the Player of the Match award.

Edwards was clearly emotional when his name was called out and couldn’t hide his appreciation for his teammates.

“Thank you boys. I love all you boys. We worked hard for this and we will enjoy it. We definitely wouldn’t be here without a bunch of great boys in the squad,” Edwards said.

“We had a win today and they were there supporting us. Thanks to Parramatta. Great game. Been doing great all year and lucky enough on the night.

“To all our fans who have shown up all year… I love you guys. Just wanted to make our community proud out there. Hopefully we did that.

“Certainly last but not least the families of all our squad members. You guys support us through thick and thin.

“You ride the rollercoaster with us. Especially my partner, I’m so lucky to have you in my corner, I will be forever grateful.”

Rugby league legend Cameron Smith tipped Edwards to win the award late in the contest.

“I just think the work Dylan Edwards has done both defensively and with the football tonight, it has been a complete package,” Smith said.
