Clearing the Logue jam: The moves which could open up the Jackson and Grundy trades

A double trade to move Griffin Logue and Darcy Tucker from Fremantle to North Melbourne and a Demons pick swap late on Tuesday could unlock deals for the big-ticket moves of the trade period: Luke Jackson and Brodie Grundy.

In the Logue-Tucker deal the Kangaroos gave up their future second- and third-round AFL compensation picks to Fremantle for the pair.

The compensation picks in next year’s draft were given to North Melbourne as part of a rescue package for sustained poor performance and were required to be traded this year. North would also give up their future fourth-round pick in exchange for the two players and Fremantle’s future third-round pick.

The future second-round pick is likely to play a role in negotiations between the Dockers and Melbourne over Jackson.

The Dockers have offered 13 and their future first to Melbourne for Jackson with the Demons rejecting the deal as insufficient. Melbourne will ask for the future second-round compensation pick tied to North Melbourne’s pick and could give back a future pick of their own to get the deal done.

The Demons traded picks 33, 43 and 53 to Port Adelaide for pick 27, which is the compensation pick the Power received for losing Karl Amon as a free agent to Hawthorn.

In negotiations between Melbourne and Collingwood over Grundy the Magpies have said they want a pick inside 25 for the two-time All-Australian ruckman who will be traded to the Demons with Collingwood paying a portion of his salary for the next five years.

Melbourne will be likely to offer the recently acquired pick 27 in this year’s draft in the deal while Collingwood will also be interested to see if Melbourne secures the future second-round pick tied to North Melbourne’s pick as part of the Jackson exchange and would prefer that in a Grundy deal.

A pick tied to North Melbourne’s future second-round pick would be reasonably anticipated to be inside pick 25 next year in what is widely regarded to be a stronger draft pool.

The Demons have been offered pick 44 from Greater Western Sydney for Toby Bedford, but the Demons are pushing for a better pick.

In other moves:

*As reported in The Age on Monday, GWS are interested in Richmond ruckman Ivan Soldo as part of a trade for Jacob Hopper to Punt Road. The Tigers have offered their future first-round pick and pick 31 for Hopper but the Giants want a player involved and are interested in Soldo as part of an exchange.

*The move of unrestricted free agent Daniel McStay from the Brisbane Lions to Collingwood was confirmed with the Lions to receive a second-round pick (35) as compensation.

That pick will mean the Lions are likely to seek to trade a pick to Hawthorn for Jack Gunston rather than take him as a free agent. Were Gunston to go to Brisbane as a free agent it would mean Brisbane would lose the compensation pick for McStay. The compensation formula is based on the net incomings and outgoings of free agents.

Hawthorn would only receive a third-round compensation pick at best for losing Gunston as a free agent, so Brisbane are better to trade a pick in that range to Hawthorn so that they keep pick 35.

*Liam Jones has officially become a Bulldog for the second time. The former Blue returns to Whitten Oval as an unrestricted free agent with Carlton receiving pick 49 as compensation.

The Blues on Tuesday picked up wingman Blake Acres from Fremantle for a future third-round pick.

*Zaine Cordy is looking to move to the Saints as an unrestricted free agent, fitting the Saints’ need for a tall defender to support Dougal Howard and Callum Wilkie.

The Bulldogs had made an offer to Cordy but knew he was considering his options, with the club hoping to recruit Docker Rory Lobb and Jones arriving as a free agent. They also have the emerging Sam Darcy as a defender alongside Alex Keath.

*St Kilda and Gold Coast are in a stalemate over a deal for Ben Long with the Saints wanting pick 25 for the player and Gold Coast reluctant to offer more than pick 36.

*Collingwood will offer a future third-round pick for key-position player Billy Frampton from Adelaide.

Fremantle are trying to bundle Jeremy Sharp and Josh Corbett together in a deal with Gold Coast. While a deal or Corbett to join the Dockers is likely the Suns are not keen on trading out 20-year-old Sharp.
