BOMBERS MEET BOWES AS RACE FOR SUNS HEATS UP

New Essendon coach Brad Scott has reportedly met with Jack Bowes as the race heats up for the Gold Coast Suns midfielder-defender.

Bowes is contracted until the end of 2024, but is set to earn up to $850,000 next year on a heavily backended contract, with the Suns open to offloading him along with pick No.7 in a bid to clear up salary cap space.

AFL Media reports Scott met with Bowes on Friday, while several other clubs are showing interest in the 24-year-old.

Geelong is among the sides interested in Bowes, who is being eyed off as a midfield recruit rather than the running half-back role he has played for large periods of his time at the Suns.

The decision is set to rest heavily on the shoulders of Bowes, who was taken with pick No.10 by the Suns in the 2016 draft.

Speaking on AFL Trade Radio, Hawthorn list manager Mark McKenzie confirmed the club had interest in Bowes.

“From our point of view, that midfield area is important for us to find that right mix and Jack brings a little bit different with the way that he plays,” McKenzie said.

“Definitely some interest, positionally, and obviously the right age from our group that’s coming through, the age demographic fits as well. We’ll explore that avenue and see where that goes.”

Essendon is also setting its sights on Suns forward Josh Corbett, with a report the Bombers, along with Fremantle and Melbourne, are interested in acquiring his services.

DEES DRIVE HARD BARGAIN FOR JACKSON

Melbourne is reportedly seeking a top-seven draft pick as well as a future first-round pick in exchange for Luke Jackson.

Jackson requested a trade back to West Australia earlier this month, with Fremantle heavily favoured to acquire his services.

The Dockers’ draft hand is slim heading into the trade period, with the club holding only pick No.13 and pick No.72, as well as future picks.

AFL Media reports the Dees want a pick within the first seven selections of this year’s draft as well as a future-first round pick for Jackson.

Still, the Dockers may be reluctant to reach too far into next year’s selections, with a wealth of WA-based talent entering their draft year in 2023.

The Dees, the report says, are unwilling to add an extra pick to the deal.

West Coast holds pick No.2 in this year’s draft, but is not understood to be willing to trade it in exchange for Jackson, who the Dees selected with pick No.3 in the 2019 draft.
