Lance Franklin has told Sydney Swans teammates he will retire, effective immediately.
Franklin informed players of the decision on Monday, with four rounds remaining in the home and away season.
He suffered a calf injury against Essendon last week, with the club to confirm the extent of the injury later on Monday.

Franklin has played 354 senior games across both Hawthorn and Sydney, booting 1066 goals.
Last year, he became just the sixth player in the game’s history to kick 1000 career goals.
He won two premiership with Hawthorn before crossing to the Swans on a landmark nine-year deal worth $10 million.
He is an eight-time All-Australian and a four-time Coleman Medal winner.
