Broncos set to extend coach’s son’s rival as hooker battle heats up: Transfer Whispers

Brisbane have reportedly re-signed young gun Cory Paix who will fight with Billy Walters this season to wear the No. 9 jersey.

Paix made his NRL debut at the Broncos in 2020 and is set to extend his stay at Red Hill until the end of 2025, per AAP.

The 23-year-old has 29 appearances to his name but Walters was the starting hooker for the majority of last season.

Paix and Walters, who turns 29 next Thursday, are battling it out this summer to start in Round 1 against the Panthers.

Both can also play in the halves and the duo will likely feature in Kevin Walters’ best 17 each week in 2023.

Paix played 12 games last year, all off the bench, and Brisbane won nine of them, but Jake Turpin’s move to the Roosters will provide more opportunities.

The Broncos now have four hookers in their squad, Walters (2024, teenager Blake Mozer (2025) and former Melbourne Storm rake Tyson Smoothy (2023).

Smoothy will start at hooker in Brisbane’s trial with Wynnum-Manly on Saturday.
