BREAKING: AFL issues please explain as Port place both players in concussion protocols after hit

Aliir Aliir and Lachie Jones have entered the AFL’s concussion protocol, with Port Adelaide issued a please explain by league HQ and club doctor Mark Fisher admitting a test should’ve been conducted sooner on Aliir.

Aliir and Jones collided during Saturday night’s loss to Adelaide, with Jones undergoing a SCAT5 test and subbed out with a migraine, but Aliir did not receive one and was permitted to return to the ground after a Head Injury Assessment and just under seven minutes off the ground.

League headquarters confirmed on Monday the Power had been issued with a please explain.

Port Adelaide told foxfooty.com.au that both Aliir and Jones presented with symptoms consistent with concussion on Monday.

Club doctor Mark Fisher admitted on Monday that Aliir should’ve undergone a SCAT5 test.

“Upon reviewing the vision of the incident again, Aliir should have undergone SCAT testing at the time immediately following the collision,” he said via the club website.

“Both Lachie and Aliir will have a gradual return to play as per the AFL’s concussion management guidelines.”

The AFL said: “In absence of the SCAT5 test occurring and out of an abundance of caution, the Port Adelaide Football Club has decided to enter Aliir into AFL Concussion protocols and he will be unable to participate, at a minimum, in the clubs Round 21 match this week vs the Geelong Cats,” the league said in a statement.

“Upon further review after being substituted on Saturday night, Port Adelaide player Lachie Jones, who was involved in the collision with Aliir, has also entered AFL Concussion protocols.

“Both players will now need to undertake and medically pass the mandatory 11-step, minimum 12-day process before returning to play.

“The AFL’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr Michael Makdissi will continue to liaise with Port Adelaide Club doctors in the monitoring both player’s progress.”
