Superstar jockey Tommy Berry will be free to ride in the majority of the spring carnival after having his ban for a “tips for benefits” scandal reduced on appeal.
Berry will return a week before Epsom day, which will also allow him to ride in The Everest, after his disqualification was reduced by an appeals panel.
The initial year-long penalty was reduced to eight months, allowing him to get back in the saddle on September 24.
It includes a seven-month disqualification and one-month suspension, which could allow him to ride trackwork from late August.
An inquiry heard Berry’s mother received $15,000 in electronic transfers from Gold Coast butcher Zaid Miller, a prominent punter who won more than $100,000 in bets from horses Berry had ridden.
Berry was found to have also used his mobile phone regularly over more than a year in the jockeys’ room, a contravention of the rules of racing.
