Baker on a roll after five-timer, century and stud deal for colt

Bjorn Baker has had one of the better weeks of his career and hopes it can flow into Rosehill on Saturday.

It started with Baker’s Randwick five-timer last Saturday, which he followed by racking up his 100th winner for the season, Don Pedro, at Hawkesbury on Sunday.

It was capped by the sale of a significant share in the unbeaten Zoustar colt Ozzmosis to Newgate Farm with an eye to the Coolmore Stud Stakes in spring.

“I have had worse weeks in my career,” Baker said. “Last Saturday was amazing because we thought we had some good horses going to races, but quite often you come home without a winner when that happens. It was one of my best days.

“Don Pedro’s win might have been missed by many, but it’s a sign that we have had a good season getting 100 winners. Then the bank balance got a bit of a kick from Ozzmosis. It doesn’t get better than that.”

The recognition for Baker from the Ozzmosis sale was as rewarding as any winner on the track.

“I have thought he was a pretty good horse for a while, but for a stud like Newgate to want to take a part of him and be a part of the stable is massive,” Baker said. “Getting Henry Field, who is a great judge, into the stable is good for business.

“We would like to think we can keep it going at Rosehill on Saturday, where we have a couple of chances.”

Newgate swooped after the easy Randwick win of Ozzmosis that kicked off Baker’s wonderful day, and Field sees the colt a major player.

“Our ratings man Daniel O’Sullivan believes he is a horse that is going to keep improving and has already run a good number,” Field said. “There are a couple of kickers in the deal if he can get to the top level, and we are looking forward to partnering with Darby Racing and Bjorn Baker in an exciting horse this spring.

“I went to inspect him on Thursday, and he reminds me a lot of Zoustar himself, and the breed get better as they get older and mature, and you can see that in him.”

Baker also has Canadian Ruler, Cosmic Minerva and Maurice’s Medad in at Rosehill.

“I’m not going there with the same confidence as last week, but with a little luck on our side we could have a winner,” Baker said. “Canadian Ruler is taking a big step from a Bathurst maiden, but it’s worth giving him his chance in town against a pretty good field.

“Cosmic Minerva is probably our best chance in the last race, where we have had a bit of luck there in the past couple of years. He has won both his trials, and I think he has matured with the spell and is in for a good campaign.”
