Australian Open 2024 Ultimate Guide: Everything you need to know

The 2024 Australian Open is tantalisingly close, with everything to play for at the first grand slam of the year.

On the men’s side, world No. 1 Novak Djokovic is bidding for an 11th Australian Open crown and 25th slam overall, which would see him break the deadlock with Margaret Court for the most major singles titles.

Despite the injury-enforced absence of Rafael Nadal, Djokovic faces no shortage of challengers desperate to dethrone the king of Melbourne Park.

Carlos Alcaraz is the last player to defeat Djokovic at a grand slam and returns to the Australian Open after missing due to injury in 2023, while Jannik Sinner finished last season in blistering fashion.

Local hopes are headlined by Alex de Minaur, who boasts a win over Djokovic in the United Cup this month and has cracked into the world’s top 10 for the first time in his career.

With Roger Federer retired and Nadal injured, Djokovic will be bidding to continue a stunning run by the ‘Big Three’ at Melbourne Park, which has seen them win 17 of the last 18 campaigns.

On the women’s side, world No. 1 Iga Swiatek will be looking for her first major Down Under and her fifth overall.

She faces stiff competition from defending champion Aryna Sabalenka and last year’s finalist Elena Rybakina.

Both looked in ominous touch at the Brisbane International this month, but Rybakina prevailed over Sabalenka in the final to again stamp her claims as an Australian Open title hope.

Melbourne Park will also host some long-awaited comebacks, with major champions Naomi Osaka and Emma Raducanu returning to the top level.

All will be competing for a $3.15 million cheque, which headlines a total prize pool of $86.5 million.

With that in mind, here’s everything you need to know about this year’s Australian Open.
