Australia v West Indies second test day three LIVE updates: Golden arm of Starc strikes in first over of the day

Key posts

WICKET: Holder nicks off

Oh, this is a terrible start for the Windies. They’ve lost another one.

Jason Holder is the man to go this time. After throwing down the stumps in his previous over, Mitchell Starc has a wicket for himself, enticing the Windies all-rounder into a loose drive.

Alex Carey made no mistake behind the pegs, taking a tidy catch low to his right.

With two wickets in 14 balls, hopes are not high for a competitive day of cricket.

WICKET: Chanderpaul run out

Fourth ball of the day and we have a wicket already. It’s a gift from the Windies.

Tagenarine Chanderpaul has been run out for 47 after a terrible mix-up with Anderson Phillip.

The Windies opener defended to the off side then took off for a single but was sent back by Phillip at the non-striker’s end. Despite a desperate lunge, Starc caught him short of his ground with a direct hit which uprooted the off stump.

Excellent piece of fielding by Starc, who made good ground to short cover, get around the ball and throw with his preferred left hand.

Starc was not confident and was on the way to the top of his mark when the verdict came through from the video umpire.

It was Chanderpaul’s call, so Phillip should have run, even if his judgment was vindicated. Also, Phillip is the nightwatchman so probably should have sacrificed himself for the frontline batter.

Mr Cricket’s no-nonsense style

If anyone is watching the Fox Cricket telecast, I’d like to get your thoughts on Michael Hussey’s commentary.

I’ve always liked his analysis, but I reckon he’s gone up another notch this year.

It should not come as a surprise for someone nicknamed Mr Cricket, but Hussey’s knowledge of the game is excellent, and he conveys it in an understated manner. There aren’t any bells and whistles, or ego, just pure cricket.

Review of day two

While we count down until the start of play on day three, hear Daniel Brettig’s thoughts from yesterday’s play.

What should we expect from today?

The beauty of Test cricket is we never know what is coming around the corner, but I suspect today will not deviate far from expectations.

Australia will most likely dismiss the West Indies today with a sizeable lead, but they will not enforce the follow-on. This will ensure the game goes into a fourth day – a Sunday no less – which will please local authorities no end.
