Australia calls up reinforcements for T20 series as World Cup champions fly home early

Australia’s World Cup heroes will return home earlier than anticipated, with six members of the national men’s T20 squad jetting out of Asia after Tuesday evening’s match against India in Guwahati.

On Tuesday afternoon, Cricket Australia confirmed that World Cup champions Sean Abbott, Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Steve Smith and Adam Zampa would fly home ahead of the fourth T20 against India. Travis Head, who missed the first half of the World Cup with a wrist injury, will remain in India for the remainder of the five-match bilateral series.

Ben Dwarshuis, Chris Green, Ben McDermott and Josh Philippe have been added to the Australia’s squad as reinforcements. McDermott and Philippe have already joined the T20 squad in Guwahati, while Dwarshuis and Green will link up with the touring party in Raipur.

The uncapped Green could become the 108th cricketer to represent Australia in men’s T20s if selected. The off-spinner has played 89 matches for the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League, taking 66 wickets at 29.56.

Earlier this week, the Sydney Sixers confirmed Smith would play the club’s tournament opener against the Melbourne Renegades at the SCG on Saturday, December 9, less than a week before the first Test between Australia and Pakistan at Perth Stadium.

The third T20 between India and Australia gets underway at Barsapara Cricket Ground on Wednesday morning AEDT with the first ball scheduled for 12.30am.
