Good evening

By Ronny Lerner

So there you have it, England now reign supreme both in the T20 and one-day arenas.

A fantastic performance from them in the final against Pakistan, in what ended up being quite a nailbiting contest.

Curran and Stokes were critical to the result, but they also enjoyed some crucial support roles from Buttler, Rashid and Moeen Ali.

Pakistan couldn’t quite replicate their heroics from 30 years ago against the same team at the same ground in the one-day world cup final.

Thank you for tuning in and following all the exciting moments from what was a very entertaining climax to the tournament.

British cricket empire rises with thorough plans realised professionally

By Greg Baum

Unfamiliar as it still sounds, the pre-match anthem said it all. God Save The King indeed. A new reign is upon us.

With this victory, which was more heart-in-mouth than the scorecard suggests, England become simultaneous world champions in both short forms. They beat New Zealand for the 50-over title at Lord’s in the most memorable final of all three years ago, but it will give them pleasure to have landed this one on the MCG with Australia watching on helplessly.

They enjoy putting one over us as much as we like putting one over them.

‘This is the icing on the cake’: Buttler

Victorious captain Jos Buttler had quite a bit to say after the game, as you can imagine.

On his team’s win in the final: “This is the icing on the cake, to win the T20 World Cup, just immensely proud. A long journey and a few changes, but we’re reaping the rewards. Fantastic tournament, Pakistan was a valuable time for the group, but this is a way away from the Ireland game.”

On coach Matthew Mott: “He’s fitted in really well, quite a few Aussies with us. He’s led the coaching staff really well, gives the players great freedom and allows us to go out and trust ourselves.”

On Adil Rashid: “Adil’s over was outstanding, he’s always the guy we throw the ball to to make something happen. It wasn’t easy at all, got away to a decent start which controlled the run-rate, and that man Ben Stokes was there at the end.”

On Stokes: “He’s the ultimate competitor.”

Curran numbers tell a tale

A closer look at Curran’s numbers illistrate why he was crowned player of the tournament.

From his six games, he took 13 wickets at an average of 11.38 and an economy of 6.52, including best figures of 5-10. A stellar effort.

He was the leading wicket-taker of all the countries who began their tournament at the Super 12 phase.

‘Shaheen injury cost us’: Babar praises Pakistan’s fight

Pakistan captain Babar Azam had some words to say after his team’s defeat…

Congratulations to England team, we felt like everyone came here to support us, thank you so much. The way the team has gone in the last four matches, incredible. I told the boys to play their natural game, with freedom. We were 20 runs short but fight to the last over was unbelievable. Our bowling is one of the best but unfortunately Shaheen’s injury cost us a different result, but that’s part of the game.

Stokes the hero again for England, the undisputed white-ball kings

By Andrew Wu

Ben Stokes strapped his teammates on his broad shoulders and carried his country to another World Cup victory as England stamped itself as the premier white-ball side of the generation at the MCG on Sunday night.

In front of a heaving and partisan crowd of 80,462, England’s Three Lions tamed the fighting Tigers from Pakistan to secure their second T20 world title with a five-wicket victory.

The scoreboard will show England ran down the target of 138 with an over remaining, but that did not reflect the tension that accompanied much of the run chase.

Curran ‘lost for words’

England quick Sam Curran has been named the player of the match and player of the tournament. What a World Cup from the 24-year-old.

I don’t think I should be getting this, the way Stokesy played there… we’re going to enjoy this occasion, very special. They had big square boundaries, so into the wicket, it offered for the seamers, nipping around and a challenge for the chase. The way I bowl, I go into the wicket with my slower balls and keep the batsmen guessing. World champions, how good! A little bit lost for words. We’re going to enjoy this.

‘We’ll cherish this’: Rashid

England spinner Adil Rashid spoke to the broadcaster after the game…

So proud of the boys … we were nervous in the run chase, but we knew we’ve got the firepower to get over the line. This doesn’t happen often, so we’ll cherish this for a long time … As a unit we bowled magnificently

Stokes praises England bowlers

England match winner Ben Stokes spoke to the broadcaster after the game…

In finals, especially chasing, you forgot all the hard work that came first. To restrict them to 130, the bowlers have to take a lot of credit. With Ireland being so early in the competition, we had to address it, we can’t carry baggage in tournaments. The best teams take it on the chin, and move onto the next challenge. A pretty good evening.
