Andrew McQualter quits Richmond after missing coaching job

After missing out on the top job at Richmond, caretaker coach Andrew McQualter has quit the Tigers.

McQualter, 37, had spent 10 years at Richmond since joining the club before the 2014 season and was thrust into the main coaching seat this season when Damien Hardwick stepped down.

In 11 games as coach, McQualter won seven games.

He put his hand up for the full-time job and was in the final two when the process reached the pointy end.

But the Tigers instead went with a fresh voice in Adem Yze.

After contemplating his position, McQualter opted to look for a position at another AFL club.

“We would like to thank Andrew for his incredible service to Richmond across 10 years. He formed great relationships within the organisation and played a big part in our success over that period,” Richmond football boss Tim Livingstone said.

“Stepping up to be interim coach was a selfless decision by Andrew, and he did a brilliant job leading the team for 13 weeks.

“Andrew moves on to further enhance his coaching credentials, which we respect.

“He is an excellent coach with a long future in the game, and we wish him and his family all the best.”
