Adam Johnson, an American ice hockey player, has died after a shocking accident in a game in England.
Johnson, a forward for the Nottingham Panthers, suffered a serious cut to his neck from a skate during a Challenge Cup match on Saturday, the BBC was reporting.
The clash with the Sheffield Steelers was stopped in the 35th minute as the 29-year-old received emergency treatment on the ice.
The Panthers released a statement on Sunday that Johnson had died.
“The Nottingham Panthers are truly devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident at the game in Sheffield last night,” the team said.
“Adam, our number 47, was not only an outstanding ice hockey player, but also a great teammate and an incredible person with his whole life ahead of him.
“The Panthers would like to send our thoughts and condolences to Adam’s family, his partner, and all his friends at this extremely difficult time.
“Everyone at the club including players, staff, management and ownership are heartbroken at the news of Adam’s passing.”
The Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) confirmed Sunday’s matches across the UK have been postponed “in light of this deeply upsetting news”.
“The thoughts of everyone connected with the EIHL are with Adam’s family, friends and teammates at this incredibly sad and difficult time,” the EIHL added.
Johnson had a brief stint with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL before competing in a number of other leagues around the world, including Sweden and Germany.
Shortly after the accident, players reportedly formed a ring around Johnson while he received treatment before protective screens were raised.
He was later taken to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital while the Panthers tweeted shortly after the incident that the 8,000 fans in attendance had “been asked to leave the building due to a major medical emergency”.
“Our thoughts are also with the fans and staff of both clubs, especially those who attended or were following the game, who will be devastated following today’s news,” the Panthers said.
“The Panthers would like to thank everyone who rushed to support Adam last night in the most testing of circumstances.
“We ask that the privacy of Adam’s family and friends, and everyone at the club is respected at this difficult time as we all seek to come to terms with our grief.
“Rest in peace Adam.”
