Melbourne premiership defender Steven May was forced to spend a night in hospital after he suffered an allergic reaction to food during a night out with his partner Sachi Dade.
Dade posted an image on Instagram of the veteran defender in a hospital bed and joked about what had occurred.
“Why does he have to try and die before we go on our holiday?! What I am happy about though is that I can say I saved his life forever now. This will definitely have its advantages,” she wrote.
A Demons spokesperson said the 31-year-old had been discharged from hospital after the reaction and would be fine, but they were yet to determine exactly what caused him to feel unwell.
However, in a text exchange shared by Dade on Instagram, May joked that he had been “very shellfish”. A source with knowledge of the incident, who preferred to remain anonymous, told this masthead that it was the first time May had suffered an allergic reaction.
May is a key player for the Demons and was among their best in their semi-final loss to Carlton. He attended the Bluey Truscott Medal count on Friday night with Dade, finishing fifth in the award.
The Demons are about to enter a big trade period with several players potentially departing, including Brodie Grundy and James Harmes. James Jordon has already joined Sydney as a free agent.
