Lakers edge out rivals to secure vital piece of play-offs jigsaw

NBA star Spencer Dinwiddie is poised to return to his hometown as he’s reportedly set to join the Los Angeles Lakers.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Dinwiddie will join the Lakers on a $AUD2.3 million deal for the remainder of the 2023/24 season after he clears waivers.

The 30-year-old was waived by the Toronto Raptors after he joined the Canadian franchise as part of a deal which had Dennis Schroder and Thaddeus Young off to the Brooklyn Nets.

Dinwiddie averaged 12.6 points, 6.0 assists and 3.3. rebounds for the Nets this season prior to the trade.

Per Charania, Dinwiddie was the Lakers’ key target on the buyout market after they failed to make a splash before the trade deadline.

The Lakers also had to squeeze in front of Dallas to bring Dinwiddie back to his hometown, with the former Nets star even taking in the Mavericks’ game against the Knicks in New York on Friday (AEDT).

But Dinwiddie was also present to watch the Lakers’ 17-point win over the Pelicans on Saturday and even sat next to the franchise’s general manager Rob Pelinka for the contest.

Dinwiddie, who was born and grew up in Los Angeles, is likely to be the third guard behind D’Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves, which is somewhat of a surprise given he had performed in a starting role since the 2021/22 season.

However, having Dinwiddie as an option off the bench is a major bonus for the Lakers as they gain a solid player for its second unit.

The Lakers will be hoping the addition of Dinwiddie can help them surge up the standings in the Western Conference as they lie in 9th spot with a record of 28-26.
