Controversial Power great scores huge win in razor-thin board election

Port Adelaide premiership captain Warren Tredrea has clinched a spot on the club’s board in a razor-thin election result.

Tredrea was competing against fellow club great Bruce Abernethy and won out with 50.9% of the vote compared to Abernethy’s 49.1%, with the margin just 199 votes.

It concluded an election at times marred by controversy, with a social media post from current player Ryan Burton sparking some discord before ultimately being smoothed out.

“I am humbled and honoured to be elected to the Port Adelaide Football Club’s Board of Directors by our Club’s members,” Tredrea said in a lengthy post on X.

“Having spent the majority of my life connected to the Club I look forward to a new chapter in this relationship where I can be a formal voice representing our Club’s passionate members.

“I understand this position is not to be taken lightly and I hold it with the utmost of responsibilities.

“I will hold myself to the highest of standards and will drive everyone involved in our Club to do the same, honouring the former custodians of the Club who drove the Club from a community Club formed just a dozen years after the game was invented, to becoming one of the winningest football Clubs in Australia.

“Port Adelaide exists to win premierships, and whilst I cannot promise on-field success, I can guarantee I will use all of my abilities and endeavours to help our Club in its efforts to win its second AFL Premiership and its first AFLW Premiership.”

Club chairman David Koch said it would be “terrific to have his knowledge and experience around the Board table.”

Tredrea drew criticism early in the 2023 season when he labelled coach Ken Hinkley’s position at the club “untenable”.

While the Power would go on to recover in the home and away season and secure a top four berth, they were dispatched in straight sets in September.

Tredrea was sacked from Channel Nine as a sports presenter at the close of 2021, leading to a lawsuit against the network, with Tredrea claiming he’d been “smeared as an anti-vaxxer” for his decision to not be vaccinated against Covid-19.
