The Australian star was right in the mix thanks to an outstanding start to the final round, firing in birdies on the third, fifth, sixth and seventh holes.
But a cruel double bogey on the eighth dropped Day down the leaderboard from T2 to T7 (-20) as America’s Chris Kirk holds the lead at -24.
The winner at The Sentry will secure a cool $AUD5.4 million for their troubles.
He wasn’t the only contender to suffer a moment of madness.
Brendon Todd, who was firmly in the mix at 21 under, snapped his driver in a fit of rage after a wayward tee shot.

Day is hoping to become the second Australian to win The Sentry in the space of three years after Cameron Smith emerged victorious in 2022.
In fact, Smith’s score of 258 (-34) set the course record as he ousted Jon Rahm by just one stroke to take home first place.
Day enjoyed solid scores throughout the first three rounds to keep pace with leader Kirk.
The Aussie fired scores of 65, 69 and 67 in the first, second and third rounds respectively to give himself a chance of winning $5.4m.
