Power star Butters inks extension as big contract call looms for fellow young gun

Port Adelaide star Zak Butters has penned a contract extension that will take him through until his free agency year of 2026.

The 23-year-old was contracted until the end of 2024, but the club announced a two-year extension on Monday for the star onballer.

It comes following a season in which Butters finished fourth in the Brownlow Medal count.

“I’m rapt to be staying on here at Port Adelaide for at least the next three seasons,” Butters said.

“It was an easy decision in the end. This club gave me my opportunity to play the game I love at the highest level and I want to repay their faith.

“I have formed great friendships within the playing group and I’m very close to Ken and the coaching group.

“I’ve got enormous confidence where our young group is heading and I’m settled in Adelaide so in the end it was a pretty straight forward decision.”

Butters’ teammate and fellow 2018 draftee Connor Rozee remains unsigned beyond 2024 and is expected to draw significant rival interest.

The Power were active players in the trade period this year, bringing in four players while losing the other of the 2018 top-end draft trio, Xavier Duursma, to Essendon.
